For the first time in our country's National Health Policy, emergency medical care is being included as part of the agenda for the 12th Five Year Plan. The final draft document has been completed and due for presentation at the coming Parliament session by the Health Minister.

Dr. Suresh David, Professor & Head of the Emergency Department at Christian Medical College Vellore is one of the many members of the Task Force which has compiled the document over 5 sessions at Nirman Bhavan, in New Delhi. The document has guidelines for EMS, emergency medicine departments for District hospitals, triage guidelines and curriculum for emergency medical technicians (ambulance paramedics).

This is an important milestone in the development of emergency medicine specialty in our country. More details will follow as news comes in.

The American Heart Association (AHA) conducted an orientation workshop to certify senior & experienced instructors to take up positions of International Regional Faculty for Asia Pacific region. 12 senior AHA lifesupport instructors underwent the orientation program which was conducted on 13th July 2011, at Max Hospitals, Saket, New Delhi.

The AHA trains healthcare providers, caregivers and general public, in responding to emergencies through their Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) training programs. Bobby Wales, an International Training Consultant for ECC Programs, said that Regional Faculty (RF) were not only important for the spread resuscitation education through conduct of Provider, Instructor & Update courses, but also to ensure that the quality of AHA courses conducted by various centers is maintained. This was done by monitoring / auditing the AHA certified training centers & their instructors at regular intervals. Laurence King, Territory Director for ECC International Programs-Asia Pacific, who was also one of the faculty, encouraged the spread of resuscitation training through partnership with Indian institutes. He said that the RF served as a feedback mechanism to report local issues directly to AHA. He also strongly encouraged research in resuscitation due to the unique population demographics in India.

Members of the International Regional Faculty serve as volunteers of the AHA and are responsible for spread of resuscitation science within the allocated region. The AHA provides logistic & financial support for all AHA volunteers. To be eligible to apply for RF, one must be an AHA instructor for atleast 2 years and must have an excellent track record for conduct of AHA courses.

The next RF Orientation is scheduled to be in early 2012.

A brief overview of the different positions you can achieve is given below:
Completing the AHA Provider Course will make you a Provider.
Completing the AHA Instructor Course will make you an Instructor.
If you are good at coordination with other instructors, you can be appointed as Lead Instructor.
If you have conducted at least 8 courses, you can be appointed as Course Director.
Your Training Center (TC) Coordinator can appoint you as TC Faculty, if you have been an instructor for atleast 2 years.
TC Faculty for RF orientation are selected and invited by AHA, for certification as International Regional Faculty.

There are 3 disciplines, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). An ACLS Provider can become ACLS Instructor, proceed to ACLS Lead Instructor and Course Director, to ACLS TC Faculty, and then to ACLS Regional Faculty. Similar line with BLS & PALS.

RIMSCON 2011, is the first South Indian Medical Student Research Conference organised at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Kadapa, AP. The conference was attended by more than 400 delegates from surrounding medical colleges of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Seran Reddy, Organizing Secretary for RIMSCON, said that this conference was structured to introduce and encourage research activity within the medical student community in South India. He said that EM was a specialty which was generating a lot of interest and therefore welcomed a talk on EM and EM Research.

Dr. Imron, who is also a reviewer for the International Journal of Emergency Medicine - IJEM (Click here to go to IJEM), introduced the concept of EM, various EM departments & training programs available in India, as well as the career opportunities which are currently available. He said that EM research was one of the important subspecialties of EM and that it had a tremendous scope in India since there is very limited data available on emergency patients.

The College of Emergency Medicine (CEM), United Kingdom conferred its honorary Fellowship (FCEM) to Dr. Mahesh Joshi, Group Director for Emergency Medicine, Apollo Hospitals Group, for his extraordinary contribution to the specialty of emergency medicine in India. He is the second physician outside Europe to receive an honorary FCEM. The first was Dr. Hariprasad, CEO-Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad. (Click here to read previous article)

Dr. Mahesh Joshi was responsible for the development of Apollo Hyderabad Emergency Department and its EM residency training programs. He now heads all the emergency departments within Apollo Hospitals Group, numbering more than 50 in number. Dr. Joshi is also the Co-Chairman of the Society of Emergency Medicine India (SEMI).

Two EM physicians also received their MCEM certificates in the same ceremony, held at Taj Banjara, Hyderabad.

The College of Emergency Medicine (CEM), United Kingdom conducted the MCEM Examiners Workshop at Apollo Health City Hyderabad, yesterday. The workshop was designed to orient and train new examiners for conducting the MCEM Part B (Theory) and Part C (OSCE Stations) examinations in India.

The new examiners included consultants from anesthesia, pediatrics, critical care, neurology, OBGYN, as well as FCEM and MCEM qualified consultants from emergency medicine (EM). All new examiners were from Apollo Hospitals Group. This was the second workshop to be conducted in India. The first one was conducted at Apollo Hyderabad in 2006. The faculty for the workshop included Dr. Helen Cugnoni, Senior Examiner for CEM, Dr. Ed Glucksman, Past Vice President for CEM, Dr. Rachel Landau, Senior Examiner and Dr. Aruni Sen, Chair - Wales National Board.

Dr. Helen said that the intent of the MCEM examination was to create doctors who have skills, knowledge & attitudes required to practice in emergency departments semi-independently, and also to orient them for further training in EM. She said that there were about 1000 CEM qualified physicians in UK and more than 3000 Fellows & Members worldwide.

Dr. Gautam Bodiwala, First President for the International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM), also addressed the new examiners. He said that he welcomed the creation of the second generation of examiners who were Indian emergency physicians and other specialists who were supporting emergency medicine. He said that this was the second generation of EM development in India.

The CEM is conducting the MCEM Part B and Part C examinations at Apollo Hyderabad on 16th and 17th June. Apart from London, the CEM conducts MCEM examinations at 3 overseas centers – Cairo, Hyderabad and Singapore.
