With the discipline and energy which goes into a stylish cricket stroke, the team led by Dr. V. P. Chandrasekaran, achieved an important milestone on 4th April 2012. The Society for Emergency Medicine India (SEMI) became a full member on the International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM). Dr. Chandrasekaran who heads the Vinayaka Mission Emergency Department at Salem, is the current President of SEMI.
SEMI is the oldest and the first Indian organization created for the development of emergency medicine (EM) in India. It was formed in 1999 with its first meeting conducted at EMCON 1999, the first Indian National Conference in EM. SEMI was responsible for the accreditation & the spread of the first academic courses in EM (1 year Fellowship in EM) from the year 2000 onwards. In addition, it conducts the annual EMCON conferences which are currently the largest gathering of qualified emergency physicians in the country. SEMI also has been persistent in its attempts to infuse the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Diplomate National Board (DNB) with the concept of emergency medicine as an independent specialty.
The British Association for Emergency Medicine, along with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians and the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine founded the IFEM, in 1991. Since then, other organisations that represent emergency medicine for their country have joined IFEM, and now number to over 50. The mission of the IFEM is to promote at an international level interchange, understanding and cooperation among physicians practicing emergency medicine. IFEM hosts the biennial International Conference in Emergency Medicine (ICEM).
SEMI is the only organisation representing India on the IFEM. In a statement made to EmergencyMedicine.in, Dr. V.P. Chandrasekaran said SEMI will utilize this opportunity to improve the standards of Indian emergency medicine, with an aim to reach that of international standards and also take all our emergency physicians to the same level.
Over the last 13 years, SEMI, its board, its teaching faculty and its members, have been instrumental in the growth and spread of emergency medicine in India. This landmark recognition on the international platform has confirmed that SEMI will remain as the true leader for the development of EM in India.

09-Apr-2012

Abstract
Currently, there is no globally recognized, standard curriculum that defines the basic minimum standards for specialist trainees in emergency medicine. To address this deficit, the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM) convened a committee of international physicians, health professionals, and other experts in emergency medicine and international emergency medicine development to outline a curriculum for training of specialists in emergency medicine.
The content of this curriculum is relevant not just for communities with mature emergency medicine systems but in particular for developing nations or for nations seeking to expand emergency medicine within the current educational structure.
For IFEM - Cherri Hobgood, Venkataraman Anantharaman, Glen Bandiera, Peter Cameron, Pinchas Halpern, C. James (Jim) Holliman, Nicholas Jouriles, Darren Kilroy, Terrence Mulligan, Andrew Singer.
