MCEM Examiners Workshop conducted at Apollo Hyderabad

The College of Emergency Medicine (CEM), United Kingdom conducted the MCEM Examiners Workshop at Apollo Health City Hyderabad, yesterday. The workshop was designed to orient and train new examiners for conducting the MCEM Part B (Theory) and Part C (OSCE Stations) examinations in India.

The new examiners included consultants from anesthesia, pediatrics, critical care, neurology, OBGYN, as well as FCEM and MCEM qualified consultants from emergency medicine (EM). All new examiners were from Apollo Hospitals Group. This was the second workshop to be conducted in India. The first one was conducted at Apollo Hyderabad in 2006. The faculty for the workshop included Dr. Helen Cugnoni, Senior Examiner for CEM, Dr. Ed Glucksman, Past Vice President for CEM, Dr. Rachel Landau, Senior Examiner and Dr. Aruni Sen, Chair - Wales National Board.

Dr. Helen said that the intent of the MCEM examination was to create doctors who have skills, knowledge & attitudes required to practice in emergency departments semi-independently, and also to orient them for further training in EM. She said that there were about 1000 CEM qualified physicians in UK and more than 3000 Fellows & Members worldwide.

Dr. Gautam Bodiwala, First President for the International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM), also addressed the new examiners. He said that he welcomed the creation of the second generation of examiners who were Indian emergency physicians and other specialists who were supporting emergency medicine. He said that this was the second generation of EM development in India.

The CEM is conducting the MCEM Part B and Part C examinations at Apollo Hyderabad on 16th and 17th June. Apart from London, the CEM conducts MCEM examinations at 3 overseas centers – Cairo, Hyderabad and Singapore.
