Emergency Medicine is NOT recognised as a specialty by the Medical Council of India as of today (July 2009).

This recent news letter from AIIMS will convince you that concrete steps are underway

Although EM curriculum development is a new initiative for Government institutes, there are many private institutes which already have defined EM curriculum for training their postgradute residents, since many years.

The step which significantly lowers the quality of EM post graduate residency training is the use of NON-EM faculty for teaching EM to new residents. EM is so unique in its approach to the wide spectrum of acute patients that only trained EM physicians can teach it. Those who are not exposed to EM are likely to have conflicting views in patient management. Although various workshops and protocol based management courses will give the necessary training in some areas, it is the bedside teaching & clinical management of hundreds of ED patients that will create a good EM physician. And this can be taught only by those who have lived in emergency medicine.
