Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre (MMHRC) started the 1 year Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine (PGDEM) in July 2010. This course is conducted in affliation with Indian Medical Association (IMA), George Washington University USA and Indian Institute of Emergency Medical Services (IIEMS).

The first batch of students graduated from the program this month. The convocation day was conducted on 31st July 2011 and the certificates were distributed to the 11 successful students of PGDEM.

Dr Narendranath Jena, Head of Accident & Emergency Medicine at MMHRC, is the course coordinator for PGDEM. Dr. Jena had completed his own certification in emergency medicine at the prestigious emergency department at Christian Medical College Vellore. He has been promoting emergency medicine in the city of Madurai for more than 3 years.

The convocation was attended by Dr. Ravishankar-National Secretary IMA, Dr. Natasha Powell-Faculty from George Washington University and Dr. George Abhram-Director IIEMS, in addition to the directors of MMHRC. Dr. Arul Rhaj-Chairman Commonwealth Health Profession Alliance was the chief guest of the occasion.

Dr. Arul Rhaj spoke about the importance of emergency medicine in todays life and expressed how this course can improve the patient outcome at the primary health care level. He stressed the need for general practitioners to take up this course to strengthen their emergency skills and treat their patients with confidence. Dr. Arul also spoke about the enormous job opportunities for those undergoing training in emergency medicine, as this specialty is in high demand and the number of trained doctors is negligible.
